RMS Olympic Silk Handkerchief

RMS Olympic, 1911, Tom Rudderham Collection

A beautiful and delicate silk handkerchief, purchased onboard the RMS Olympic, circa 1920.

This handkerchief is unusual in that it is dated around the early 1920’s, but shows the Olympic with its original lifeboat configuration. It was likely purchased within the ship’s onboard Barbers Shop. Woven in delicate silk, is features an illustration of the Olympic in its centre, with an intricate pattern around its edges. The central text reads:

“R.M.S. Olympic
LEGNTH. 882.5 FT. ~ BREADTH. 92.4 FT. ~ 46,359 TONS GROSS REGISTER 66,000 TONS DISPLACEMENT. ~ SPEED, 22.5 KNOTS. ~ 11 STEEL DECKS ~ ACCOMMODATION FOR 2500 PASSENGERS ~ 860 CREW ~ THE FIRST LARGE LINER TO BE FITTED WITH OIL-FIRED ENGINES.”

Condition: Heavily faded from exposure to sunlight. A small tear in the lower-left corner. Held onto cardboard by masking tape.
