This piece of handrail was originally part on a second-class staircase, onboard Titanic’s sister ship, the R.M.S. Olympic. Carved from sturdy oak, it helped passengers climb the stairs between A, B, and C decks.
After the Olympic was scrapped in 1935, this staircase began a second life in the Haltwhistle paint factory, in Northumberland, U.K. You can see small traces of this second life, by the specks of white and avocado-coloured paint spots.
